The jungle is one huge orchestra and the birds are its central instrument. For Uruguay-born Juan Pablo Culasso, understanding this music, both the jungle’s sounds and silences, is an inexplicable and emotive process. Blind since birth, Juan Pablo has developed the ability to identify the sounds of over 700 birds.

Winner of National Geographic’s 2014 ‘Super Brains - Latin America’, Juan Pablo competed against Latin America’s most brilliant minds, beating them by identifying 30 birds (out of 500) by their scientific name, by ear alone.

The documentary is a personal and sonorous portrayal of Juan Pablo; a road movie of jungle, water, snow and asphalt, following the protagonist and his inseparable companion Ronja (his guide dog) over a period of 30 days in Colombia.

From the city of San Pablo (Brazil) Juan will take on Colombia’s lush Amazon, climb snow-peaked summit ‘Santa Isabel’ and explore the intense and urban city of Medellin; showing us that even without sight one has the ability to ‘see’ via the sound of nature.

Being an obsessive artist in search of perfection in a dark world is something that Juan says has changed his life; filling it with poetry and meaning.

There is more to seeing than sight. This is something Juan Pablo has achieved – the ability to see despite his total visual impairment. The story behind this documentary is profoundly sensorial, unique, touching and captivating. This is why I have been so deeply moved by it and feel the need and desire to document it.

Juan Pablo’s patience and enthusiasm in the face of the opportunities and obstacles he faces through his work is admirable. His determination and way of life, adventurous spirit and passion, wonder in the face of the unknown, strength when overcoming difficulties, incredible stubbornness when reaching for his goals and desire to explore and enjoy the world from within a dark universe is truly awe-inspiring.

I strongly believe in the talent and compassion of my team, the tenacity of our protagonist and the potential of our project. I have total confidence that ‘The sound of your eyes …’ will invite its audience to see the world via its inexhaustible sounds.

We are ready … are you?
